The Manitoba Driver
from Manitoba Public Insurance

November is the highest month for motor vehicle/wildlife collisions.

Every year in Manitoba there are about 6,600 collisions involving a motor vehicle and a deer. In total, more than 10,000 collisions take place between vehicles and wildlife in the province. More than 300 people have been injured in these crashes.

The two worst months for vehicle/deer collisions is November, with 1,600 according to Manitoba Public Insurance. "Motorists are encouraged to be extra cautious during these two months," says Clif Eden, Manager of Road Safety with MPI.

“Motorists should try to anticipate that an animal could cross a road in front of you,” says Eden. “Slowing down in areas where wildlife are known to be is a good, first step. Have passengers also look out for animals. Watch for eye glare during the dusk and dawn hours.”

Manitoba Public Insurance recently posted two maps on its website which show exactly where the highest-risk, and high-risk areas are located within the province and city of Winnipeg. The regions are determined by claims data collected by Manitoba Public Insurance. Surprisingly, there is an average of 410 collisions annually between deer and motor vehicles in Winnipeg.

“The data dispels the notion that wildlife collisions only occur in rural Manitoba,” said Eden. “The data indicates that there are a number of high-risk areas within Manitoba’s capital city.”

This Remembrance day. Continue the tradition of why we remember.

Why remember?

We must remember. If we do not, the sacrifice of those one hundred thousand Canadian lives will be meaningless. They died for us, for their homes and families and friends, for a collection of traditions they cherished and a future they believed in; they died for Canada. The meaning of their sacrifice rests with our collective national consciousness; our future is their monument.

Auto glass claims made even easier: Manitoba Public Insurance introduces eGlassClaim.

One call does it all for Manitobans wanting to open an auto glass claim with Manitoba Public Insurance.

Effective today, Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) will introduce a new Web application that will enable glass repair facilities to register claims on behalf of customers.

The new application, called eGlassClaim, will interface with MPI’s claims systems and enable customers to initiate glass claims at the repair shop of their choosing. Under the old system, customers were required to report claims to MPI’s Call Centre first.

eGlassClaim will also benefit glass repair shops, as it will allow them to submit invoices to MPI electronically and get paid automatically.

“This new system will make it easier for both the customer and our business partners in the glass repair industry to do business with MPI,” said Marilyn McLaren, President and CEO of Manitoba Public Insurance. “It’s a natural progression for us, as we continue to explore new ways to use technology to increase value for our customers.”

The new process will also reduce the number of calls to MPI’s Call Centre for registering routine glass claims, allowing call staff to provide even greater service to other customer’s needs.

All glass repairers will be invited to participate in the new program, but participation in the program is optional, explained McLaren.

Vehicle Inspection fee now $55: takes effect August 1

A government-authorized vehicle safety inspection will increase by $10, Manitoba Public Insurance announced today.

Starting August 1 the cost of a vehicle safety inspection will be $55, up $10 from the previous fee of $45. The increase applies to safety inspections for cars, motorcycles and light trucks.

“This is the first increase in nine years,” Ward Keith, Registrar of Motor Vehicles, Manitoba Public Insurance, said today.

“Over the last decade some costs of doing an inspection have gone up. The increase is meant to help cover the costs incurred by the inspection station operator. As before, some inspection stations may charge less than the maximum.”

The safety inspection doesn't include a detailed inspection of the engine or transmission and is not a guarantee of the overall quality of the vehicle. Prospective vehicle buyers are encouraged to take their vehicle to a mechanic of their choosing for a pre-purchase inspection.

Vehicles which pass the government safety receive a Certificate of Inspection, explained Keith.

“The COI is valid for a year,” said Keith. “Once your vehicle is certified safe, you receive a Certificate of Inspection (COI) which confirms the vehicle meets minimum safety requirements.”

iPhone App for Collisions

We always try to be safe and prepared in today’s world, unfortunately getting into an accident does happen. Although you can not text or talk and drive in Manitoba, having your phone at hand is one of the smartest companions in the event of an accident. The iPhone offers ‘iWrecked’, your full featured guide allowing you to take & log photos, record witnesses, vehicle information and much more. The best part is that its FREE.

iWrecked

Features

  • Fully detailed Accident log and history
  • Take unlimited photos with the camera or import from photo library
  • Preview/Send Accident Report with images (PDF format)
  • Find nearby taxi and/or towing companies to assist you
  • Call emergency numbers (911) with the press of a button
  • Vehicle Information log (unlimited vehicles and images supported)
  • Call buttons to make direct calls (like insurance company, other driver and more)

We found that some of the details are not quite “MPI Friendly”, targeted to the privatized insurance process. but the overall application is great to have. We don’t always carry a pen but everyone always has their cell phone. Hopefully this application can assist you.

Rainbow Dreams Fundraiser a Success

An excerpt from Laurie Mustard's Autonet column.

Dale Hickey of Cruisin' the 'Peg fame tells me following the completion of last week's trade show and Rainbow Society fundraiser, he's going into hibernation for a few weeks, focusing on projects other than cars for the time being.

Yeah right. That'll last a couple of hours. As soon as the buzz from last weekend's show wears off, he'll be bored and back into all things cars at the first opportunity. In the meantime, enjoy his review of the Rainbow Dreams gathering:

Wishes will come true for some kids with life threatening diseases — thanks to all of the folks who attended and contributed to the Rainbow Dreams Fundraiser last Saturday.

The day began with a trade show in Mybar on Regent Avenue. Local automotive businesses showcased their products and services in a relatively intimate, community spirited venue.

For its debut, the event was a win-win for both visitors and exhibitors. It proved an excellent testing ground for similar future trade shows. The evening social was a great party for all. The Bud, Spud & Steak dinner/music/prizes were fantastic! As usual, I had a ball giving away tons of swag. Smiles graced the room all evening.

But the best part of the whole day was the funds drive. Although the numbers are not final yet, at least $5,000 was raised for the Rainbow Society. In addition to that, the Corvette Club of Manitoba presented Rainbow executive director Grace Thompson with a generous contribution of $2,009!

The many companies and individuals who donated prizes deserve to be recognized, but we just do not have enough space in this column to list them. All donated for the sheer purpose of supporting a great kids cause, sincere thanks to each of you.

I do, however, want to express my personal gratitude to Robbie Mydonick of Intercity Autobody. Sans coercion or prompting by me, Robbie enlisted support from her associates, suppliers, customers & friends that was key to the success of the entire Rainbow Dreams initiative.

In concert with everyone who touched this project, I hope that the money raised will make a few sick kids smile as their dreams come true.

—Dale Hickey

Applause for a magnificent effort sir. Happy motoring.

Ten Halloween Safety Tips

pumpkinA healthy reminder from the Canada Safety Council to keep our families safe this Halloween.

  1. Children should be accompanied by an adult.
  2. Children should wear clothing that can easily be seen at night. Retro-reflective materials are best.
  3. Children should trick or treat in one well-known area and not wander into unknown neighborhoods.
  4. All candy should be inspected by an adult to make sure that no one has tampered with it. If it looks suspicious, the police should be contacted.
  5. Children should avoid stray animals.
  6. Children should wear masks that do not interfere with vision. Better yet, they can avoid masks by wearing makeup.
  7. Children should watch for moving vehicles when crossing streets. Drivers be extra cautious of children on the roads and cars frequently stopping and children piling out.
  8. Costumes should be short enough that the child will not trip.
  9. Trick or treaters should dress appropriately for the weather and carry a flashlight.
  10. For extra safety, organize a Halloween party for children in your neighborhood.
